PSHE & Relationships Education
Intent
At Broadfield Primary Academy, our PSHE curriculum is designed to prepare children to thrive as rounded individuals in modern society. We aim to provide a comprehensive, age-appropriate, and statutory-compliant education that supports pupils' personal development, health, and well-being. Our intent is to foster emotional literacy, promote respectful relationships, and ensure children have the knowledge and skills to navigate their lives safely and responsibly, both online and offline. By teaching children to recognise concerns, manage their feelings, and build positive community connections, we enable them to develop resilience, empathy, and the communication skills necessary for their future success.
Implementation
We deliver our PSHE curriculum using the Jigsaw PSHE 3-11 whole-school framework, which provides a consistent, spiral approach where topics are revisited annually with increasing depth. Implementation includes:
-
Learning is taught through weekly one-hour sessions, organised into six themed units or "Puzzles”: Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me.
-
Every lesson integrates 'Calm Me Time' to support self-regulation, 'Connect Us' activities to build social skills, and opportunities for oracy to practice respectful dialogue.
-
While we follow the Jigsaw programme, our class teachers adapt content to reflect the specific context, developmental stages, and needs of our pupils, incorporating feedback from pupil voice, surveys, and school council discussions.
-
PSHE learning is reinforced across school life, connecting with other curriculum areas like Science (life cycles, health), Computing (online safety), and Religious Education, and is embedded through school values and assemblies.
Impact
We evaluate the impact of our PSHE curriculum by monitoring children’s outcomes in terms of knowledge, skills, and personal well-being. Success is evidenced through:
-
Evidence of Growth: Observation of improved emotional vocabulary, the ability to resolve conflicts constructively, and the development of resilience and confidence in participating in discussions.
-
Well-being Indicators: Monitoring of pupil well-being, mental health indicators, and behaviour data to ensure children feel safe, supported, and able to seek help when needed.
-
Assessment and Feedback: Regular formative assessment, review of children's work, and pupil voice activities to ensure the curriculum meets children's needs and that they are prepared for transition to secondary school.
-
Community Engagement: Successful partnership with parents and carers, evidenced through ongoing consultation and engagement with curriculum materials, ensuring that family values and home circumstances are respected and represented.
